The Cause – Stress!
Why now? Stress causes the brain to release a hormone called cortisol to help us cope. However, cortisol stimulates the production of oil which can block pores. When that happens bacteria gets trapped inside and the next thing you know, you have an unwelcome pimple and an inconvenient time.
What Now? Fix it – Quick!
First, don’t pick it! Picking and squeezing often makes matters worse. Picking opens the pimple and open blemishes are at risk of infection and scarring. They take longer to heal and are harder to conceal with makeup.
Reduce swelling with ice. This will not heal the blemish but it will help bring the angry swelling down a little. Simply hold an ice cube on the blemish for a few seconds at a time.
Use a fast acting spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide and/or sulfur to calm the skin, reduce inflammation and redness while it kills bacteria. Look for a product with added healing and conditioning ingredients to repair the skin and prevent scarring.
For large cysts, contact your doctor and request a corticosteroid injection. This is injected directly into the blemish to reduce swelling, heal and prevent scarring. After this treatment the cyst usually shrinks and heals over the next 48-36 hours. Never pick cystic acne! Doing so will certainly cause permanent scarring!
Covering It Up
When acne strikes right before your wedding day or other big event, it’s time to get serious. This is no time for a simple concealer. Use a product with enough pigment to hide pimples in just one coat. Or double up on the concealer using two shades to blend a precise match for your skin, making it thick enough to cover and conceal. Use the same custom blend for touch-ups throughout the day.
Tip #1: For best results, moisturize skin before applying concealer – this ensures a smooth application of concealer and foundation.
Tip #2: Use a small brush to apply the concealer – dabbing it on and gently blending it until covered. (Wash brush afterwards to avoid contamination).
