We spend countless hours and hard-earned funds on anti-aging creams and treatments to defy the clock and appear younger – and all that effort has paid off. Then comes the makeup, and somehow that youthful glow is now more.
That’s because few have mastered the skill of applying makeup in a way to achieve a timeless beauty that enhances our looks, rather than our flaws. Take heart, and try implementing these fundamental strategies of applying makeup so it looks timeless:
Primer – for a flawless, if not timeless look, especially for mature or uneven skin, always begin with a good primer. These create a silicone base for makeup. It fills tiny lines and wrinkles and smoothes the way for flawless, long-lasting, makeup application. Don’t overdo it – use just a pea size amount of primer and spread evenly over the face. Allow it to set before the next step.
Concealers – these are an essential first step in covering uneven skin tone, small dilated veins and other blemishes. The trick is to apply the product as thinly as possible. If heavier coverage is needed, apply another thin layer (once the first application has dried) to achieve ideal coverage. Use a continuous motion from corner to corner under then eye, then bled with a sponge or brush. Avoid using your fingertips since they will deposit oils on the skin.
Foundation – this is possibly the most important selection you will make (see our article on Foundation for more information on all the types of foundation). Your foundation should mimic your skin color and texture. For example, a matte finish is only ideal for video appearances and photo shoots. In reality they make the skin look flat and may even emphasis lines and wrinkles. Rather, select a slightly dewy finish for a more flattering, youthful look.
Eye Shadow – smoking hot eyes are great for the very young and special nights on the town. But for a timeless beauty, focus on the eyebrows and eyelashes. Spend time on achieving full, long lashes. Use faux lashes, or lash building products to emphasis the eye. Apply mascara on the middle lashes – this draws the focus away from crow’s feet and drooping corners. Eyeliner should end just before the end of the outer lashes to create the illusion of lift to the eyelid. Finally, lift the eye brow by keeping the of the end of the brow from dipping too low.
Finishing Powder – these are mostly overused. Finishing powders end up settling in fine lines and wrinkles – and that timeless, youthful look is no more. If you like the idea of a finishing product, many foundations have a finishing compound for a natural looking finish. Or try a setting spray that deliver a fine mist that settles on the face to ensure that makeup stays in place from the time you apply it to the time you take it off. The fine mist sets weightlessly over the skin, controlling shine and extending the wear time of your makeup.
Lips – knowing the rules of lip color can help create a timeless look. Dark colors make the lips recede while light shades reflect light and appear more youthful. For thinner lips, lip liner helps prevent feathering and bleeding into the vertical lines of the mouth.
