3 Ways to Reverse Damaged Skin
We wait all year for the warm months of Summer – taking in all the fun, sun, and outdoor activities it has to offer. But all that summer living comes at a cost! Sunshine, time in the pool (all that chlorine!), etc., has an aging effect on your looks, leaving your skin dull and discolored – not radiant and glowing.
No need to avoid all the fun and relaxation Summer has to offer – after all, it’s important to plan some serious downtime to replenish your body, mind and spirit. However, once the fun if over, you need to plan on a way to reverse signs of damaged skin – remove all the dull, discolored skin and reveal a more youthful, glowing complexion. Here’s how:
Exfoliate: Most of us take a break from exfoliating during the Summer for two reasons: (1) we don’t want to remove the little summer glow we get from being out in the sun, or strip away the ‘fake tan’ we have applied; (2) we know that exfoliating will make the skin more prone to burning so we hold off during the summer months. That means there is a layer of dead skin cells preventing the youthful, glowing skin beneath from revealing itself.
Now it’s time to remove excessive dead skin build-up with a gentle exfoliating scrub once or twice a week (try some of the at-home recipes below) or by using AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) pads two or three times a week to chemically exfoliate dead skin cells. Simply wipe the face with these AHA pads two or three times a week to gently slough off dead cells – results should be evident within 14 days.
Reduce/Fade Spots: Dark spots, freckles, brown spots come from exposure to UV rays and all add years to your look. Fade these uneven blotches with a three-tiered approach:
- Use a 4% skin lightening hydroquinone product every night after cleansing to block new melanin production.
- Apply a melanozyme based product in the morning to break down existing pigment on the skin’s surface.
- Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen daily to prevent dark spots, freckles and patches from coming back.
Chemical Peels or Laser: If brown spots or age spots do not respond to creams, they can safely and effectively be removed by a variety of chemical peels or laser treatments. For general dullness, try a light chemical peel which uses the same ADAs as the over the counter products (except they are stronger). There is no recovery time for a chemical peel and you will look brighter and younger in just one treatment.
For darker spots on the face, neck or chest, one of the most effective treatments is the use of Q-switched lasers. These special lasers target and break up the melanin. Often, one treatment is enough to eradicate brown spots safely and effectively anywhere on the body. Rarely will a second touch up treatment be necessary.
