Turmeric – A Powerful Antioxidant
Turmeric is an ancient spice that we mostly associate with Indian and South Asian cuisine. But when it comes to healthy skin, Turmeric is a powerhouse.
This beautiful, bright yellow powder is derived from the roots of a plant related to ginger and contains a super-antioxidant called Curcumin. This antioxidant is capable of affecting the skin at the molecular level where it can fight free radicals, heal and treat damaged skin and promote firm, smooth, healthy skin.
While Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in India for health and beauty reasons, it is gaining more and more recognition for its health benefits in the West. Many people take Turmeric as a daily supplement or include the ingredient in their diet, where it can work its magic from the inside out. And topically applied Turmeric skincare treatments are being recognized for the visible benefits the antioxidant delivers.
So why is Turmeric gaining popularity in Western cultures as a powerful and effective ingredient in skincare treatments? First, as stated, the super-antioxidant is capable of penetrating the skin beyond the Epidermis (top layer). That makes it a more effective treatment since it affects the skin at the Dermal layer where oil glands, collagen and elastin reside. But there’s more:
The powerful antioxidant in Turmeric (Curcumoid) fights free radicals by inhibiting cell oxidation which is key to preventing and reversing the aging process.
It has antibacterial qualities to help speed the healing process and rid the skin of bacteria from wounds, cuts, or injuries associated with acne.
Turmeric controls acne – even stubborn acne. Because it has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial qualities, it is an ideal treatment for acne-prone skin. It not only helps cleanse the skin of harmful bacteria, it calms inflamed blemishes and speeds the healing process. Taking Turmeric orally (either 1 teaspoon of powder a day – maybe add it to a salad, yoghurt or tea) or taken as a supplement (you can get Turmeric pills at a health food store) will deliver even more marked improvement in your acne.
Turmeric evens out skin tone. Whether from sun damage or the aging process, the skin becomes mottled, spotted and uneven. With regular use, the antioxidants in Turmeric will fade uneven skin tone and dark spots revealing a smoother, more even complexion.
It promotes elasticity, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles and improves the skin’s tone to prevent sagging. In fact, Turmeric is so well-known for its ability to improve and preserve elasticity in the skin that most Indian mothers-to-be apply turmeric paste to their growing bellies every day to prevent stretch marks and maintain soft, supple skin long after baby arrives.
How to Use Turmeric for Healthy, Beautiful Skin
You can take Turmeric orally once a day – either in supplement form, or by adding one teaspoon a day to your favorite salad, yoghurt, tea or simply by including it in your recipes. Or you can use Turmeric topically as a treatment. A note of caution though! Some people find that Turmeric stains their skin – we find that those recipes contain too much of the powerful powder. However, we will try to post ‘recipes’ that will not leave your skin stained. If you have slight staining after your treatment, try using a simple toner after cleansing or a cotton ball soaked in milk – this usually removes any residual staining (if any).
Start with a supply of Turmeric – purchased at any grocery or health food store.
Basic Mask – Add ½ teaspoon of Turmeric to plain yoghurt (enough to treat your face). Add a ½ teaspoon of honey – mix well and apply to face. Leave for 20 minutes and rinse with warm water.
As a spot treatment for acne – simply add a little Turmeric powder to a few drops of water and a dab of honey and place the mixture directly onto blemishes every other night and see the difference! Or use the recipe as a simple face mask – it will help clear acne breakouts and blemishes, fade acne scars, reduce oil secretion, and calm irritated, red skin. Anti-Aging Treatment – add a little Turmeric powder to buttermilk or yoghurt. Apply to skin and let it dry. The lactic acid will not only help peel away dead skin cells, it will also soften the skin.
Add a little Turmeric powder to any of your favorite facemasks for added benefit. After all, the beautiful women on India swear by the ancient practice of using Turmeric for healthy, beautiful skin!
