Fat Transfer is a revolutionary cosmetic procedure that can restore a youthful appearance to the face, using your own fat.
As we age, our face starts to sag and wrinkles are formed as collagen and elastin fibers break down under the skin. Environmental conditions and sun damage can further cause lines and wrinkles in the skin.
These factors in addition to hereditary and genetic makeup can cause the face to lose some of its volume. That loss of volume, in simple terms, is a loss of fat from the facial area.
The procedure offers a simple, safe, non- invasive way to eliminate lines and wrinkles, or fill hollow areas giving the face a more rested, youthful and healthier look.
Fat transfer can have the effect of a face lift without the incisions and recovery time – and using fat from your own body eliminates the possibility of rejection or allergic reaction. According to the American Medical Association the average cost nationwide of traditional face lift is $9,000 to $15,000. Fat Transfer can be done for much less without the long recovery time associated with a traditional face lift.
How Fat Transfer Works
The first step is to remove fat from your own body – usually from the abdomen or buttocks. The fat is cleaned and injected into the areas pre-determined by you and your doctor.
The procedure may take up to two hours and is often performed under “twilight sedation,” which combines a number of medications that leave you sleepy and numb but awake.
After the procedure, it takes three to four days for the capillaries (tiny blood vessels) to reach and supply the newly-transplanted fat cells with a blood. During that time, about 60-65% of the fat cells will die and 35-40% will remain in place. Because of the amount of ‘loss’ or absorption that takes place, your doctor will ‘over-fill’ each area which may initially look like the face is swollen or puffy.
Over time this effect will diminish, resulting in a more normal result, however, more than one treatment may be required to achieve the best results. For this reason, your doctor will freeze and store your fat for future treatments if they are needed. Each time the procedure is repeated, more fat accumulates in the treated area. This tends to offer longer-lasting results.
