Chocolate is famously high in antioxidants. Raw cacao (cocoa) powder is considered one of the world’s most beneficial super foods. It has four times more antioxidants than goji berries, ten times the antioxidant level of blueberries and thirty times the antioxidant level of green tea.
No wonder chocolate is gaining a silent but steady following among health and beauty buffs who swear by the benefits of using it for their skin. In fact, celebs like Madonna, Uma Thurman, and Victoria Beckham have believed in the benefits of chocolate skin treatments for years.
Chocolate, as an organic skin product, comes in many forms – face creams, face masks, moisturizers and lip balms to name a few. The use of organic products in their purest form means no chemicals, preservatives, and additives. Advocates of chocolate for skin care believe that antioxidants and other compounds found in chocolate-based products help keep the skin looking and feeling fresh. There are even spas that offer chocolate based therapies and skin treatments like chocolate exfoliating scrubs and chocolate body wraps. The anti-aging flavonoids in chocolate boost the circulation, hydrate the skin cells, reduce redness and cut UV damage by 25%.
Chocolaty Treatments You Can Try at Home
Here are two recipes you can try at home. These creamy face mask recipes help exfoliate and rejuvenate skin leaving it radiant, soft, and smooth. Aside from the skin benefits these recipes offer, they also help to increase the serotonin level in the brain to stabilize your mood, leaving you with a sense of well being.
Chocolate Facial Recipe #1
- 1/3 Cup raw Cacao (cocoa powder) – available at most health food stores
- ¼ Cup dark organic honey
- 2 Tablespoons heavy cream or plain yoghurt
- 3 Teaspoons of oatmeal
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl to form a smooth paste. Let it stand for 5 minutes to thicken slightly. Apply the chocolate face mask to your clean face, neck and chest area – avoiding the eye area.
Lightly massage in circular motions with fingertips to help loosen dead skin. Relax and leave on for 15-20 minutes to let the mask work its magic.
Rinse the mask off with warm water. Pat dry and apply a natural skin moisturizer.
- 1/3 cup Cocoa Powder
- 3 Teaspoons heavy cream
- 2 Teaspoons cottage cheese
- ¼ Cup honey
- 3 Teaspoons oatmeal
Mix all ingredients together using a blender if you have one. Smooth onto face and relax for ten 10 minutes. Wash off with warm water.
This chocolaty mask is also an excellent moisturizer, leaving your skin baby soft.
