Natural Mineral Suncreens
Are natural sunscreens effective and do they provide the same level of protection as regular sunscreens?
Typically, sunscreens labeled ‘natural’ contain no chemical actives – they contain pure mineral based actives like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. You should not find parabens, polyethylene glycol (PEG) an ingredient commonly found in cosmetics, synthetic dyes, fragrances or petrochemicals in natural sunscreen products.
The best advance in the new natural sunscreens is that their zinc oxide or titanium dioxide formulas no longer leave the skin looking white – new formulas are light, non-greasy and absorb fully into the skin without leaving a bright white residue.
There are two products we like – both provide effective broad spectrum protection from the sun with proper application, and both products are ideal for adults, babies 6 months+ and people with sensitive skin.
True Natural ® SPF 40 Active Sunscreen
This all natural, eco-friendly sunscreen was rated #1 in Sport Diver Magazine. According to reviewers: “True Natural has an appetizing scent, great coverage, and the lowest ghost effect (non-whitening)”, “our favorite scent”, and “one of the most water resistant”.
True Natural also has an all natural, unscented, extremely gentle sunscreen suitable for babies and those prone to skin allergies. Made with ultra-moisturizing Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Coconut Oil, and zinc oxide, this gentle blend provides an instant, invisible shield against damaging UVA and UVB rays for the face & body.
If you are looking for an all natural product, always check labels thoroughly – here is the list of ingredients in True Natrual’s SPF 40 Active Sunscreen.
All True Natural products are certified cruelty free – we all like that!
Episencial® Sunny Sunscreen
Episencial® Sunny Sunscreen SPF 35 has been rated safe for the sensitive skin of newborns.
According to Episencial’s natural Pediatric expert, sunscreen should be applied to baby daily. “The best SPF for your baby’s sunscreen lotion is SPF35 if you are playing at the beach, park or in the back yard and is perfect for newborn skin. The best sunscreen SPF could be less if you will be mostly indoors.” Alan Greene, MD.
This natural mineral, broad spectrum, lightweight, non-greasy formula is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. The product is unscented and contains no additives, parabens, phenoxyethanol, harsh preservatives, EDTA, SLS, synthetic fragrances, gluten, or nut oils.
Not just for babies, this product was reviewed by adults in the April issue of In Style magazine. Testers found that they ‘loved the lightweight texture of the formula’ and that they were ‘amazed at how, after just a little blending, the non-tacky cream disappeared completely into the skin’.
