If you have dry skin, finding ways to soothe and hydrate is an ongoing process. There are a number of reasons for dry skin, some are genetic and some have to do with our environment. For example, our skin dries out more in the winter than at any other time of the year for a number of reasons.
- Lack of moisture in the air
- Forced heat
- Cold wind and more
The result is that dry skin looks dull and grey – no it’s not just the lack of sunshine, it has more to do with the accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin.
Here are some ways to polish dull, tired looking skin and reveal a healthier, softer, more hydrated glow:
- 1 Tbs. milk powder
- 1 tsp. honey
- 1 Tbs. olive oil
- 1 cup Oatmeal
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl with a clean wooden spoon or your hands until it forms a paste. Apply a thin layer over your body and gently buff the paste into your skin using small, circular motions. Rinse with warm (not hot) water.
Why This Works: Oatmeal acts as an exfoliator to remove dead skin cells and polish the skin. Honey’s antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties protects, rejuvenates and refreshes depleted skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and supple. Olive oil softens the skin and helps lock moisture in. Finally, the lactic acid in the milk powder acts as an effective cleansing agent that also reduces fine lines and dissolves dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.
Honey and Milk Hydrating Soak:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup honey
- ¼ cup Epsom salts
Fill a tub with warm (not hot) water. Pour the milk, honey and Epsom salts into the bath. Swirl the water until the salts have dissolved and submerge yourself in the water for 15 minutes to fully soak in the softening ingredients, calm your body and rejuvenate your spirit. Make this treatment more of a ‘treat’ by lighting some scented candles and turning down the lights.
Why This Works: The milk’s lactic acid not only dissolves dead skin cells, it improves the skin’s texture and stimulates hydration. The honey acts as a calming, healing and nourishing agent that promotes tissue growth, increases elasticity, acts as an exfoliant by loosening dead skin cells, and helps the skin retain moisture. Epsom salts remove toxins from the skin and softens it, turning rough, dry skin into smooth, soft skin.
