Replacing Collagen

For thousands of years people have searched for a miracle panacea to fight the signs and process of aging – especially the visible signs of aging – dry wrinkled, sagging skin.  Cleopatra is probably one of the most famous examples of someone who consistently pampered her skin in the pursuit of ageless beauty.

Today, we know that collagen is responsible for our youthful skin.  Normally adult skin is 80% (dry weight) collagen and 4% elastic fibers. Collagen provides the strength our tissue and organs require while elastin provides the ability to stretch and recoil – giving us that firm, supple touch to the skin.

As we age and reach our 20s, the collagen in our body gradually depletes due to external factors such as sun exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol and pollutants. Given the emphasis we have always placed on youth and beauty, it was only a matter of time before skincare professionals and cosmetic manufacturers started devising ways to stimulate the production of collagen in skin cells.

Ways to Replace Collagen

The goal of most skin rejuvenation treatments is to stimulate the growth of your own collagen.  Many treatments use lasers, high frequency, IPL, and hyaluronic acid injections to stimulate the production of collagen.  To read more about these treatments, click on the related articles below.

Then there is a range of FDA approved injectable collagen.  Some are made from human collagen, some from porcine (pig) collagen, and some from purified bovine (cow) collagen.   Administered by licensed professionals only, these injectables are ideal for fine lines and moderate wrinkles.  Results are immediate and can last anywhere from 3 – 12 months. Skin testing is advised prior to receiving any injectable collagen.

Collagen creams are another source of collagen ‘replacement’ and after researchers developed a collagen ideal for cosmetic preparations in the early 1990’s, we now have an abundance of collagen-infused  products to help us delay the visible signs of aging.

Collagen supplements, taken orally, are popular in Japan and effectively help to reverse the signs of aging from the inside.  Specially developed technology to extract the collagen from the skin of freshly caught salmon,  is part of the process used to make IVI Premium Collagen Powder Drink.

Other products like Fine Hyaluron & Collagen™, also created in Japan, have elastin, hyaluronic acid (HA), fish peptide, collagen, biotin, and vitamin C, in the formula to help ‘reverse aging, dry, scaly, wrinkled, sagging, age spotted skin by building, youthful, flexible, elastic, radiant, younger-looking firmer skin, and renewing joints, eyes, and connective tissue.’
