Obagi’s Blue Peel® for Skin Resurfacing
Skin resurfacing can take years off your face. One way to resurface the skin is with a chemical peel. Chemical peels can be applied by a physician at different strengths and levels to achieve different results. Medium level chemical peels are highly effective for rejuvenating the skin and promoting smooth, healthy skin. They also help improve superficial discoloration and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.
The Obagi Blue Chemical Peel is a medium depth peel that is perfect for younger patients with sun-damaged skin, enlarged pores, discoloration or fine lines and wrinkles by chemically removing the surface layers if skin and encouraging the formation of new skin cells.
Why is the Peel Blue?
Obagi® uses Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) as the active peeling agent(one of the most common chemicals used for skin rejuvenation) which is mixed with the patented Blue Base from Obagi. The blue color helps the doctor judge the depth of acid penetration so she or he knows when to stop further acid application to the skin since not every skin needs the same number of acid applications to achieve the desired results.
The TCA concentration and the amount of acid used for one session chemical peel are two important factors that determine the depth of the peel. Concentrations of TCA can vary from 15% to 50%. Higher concentrations leading to a deeper peel. The outcome of this procedure depends on the skill and technique of the physician – so selecting a physician who is well practiced in the procedure is important.
Preparation for Medium Chemical Peel
Preparing your skin before a chemical peel will result in better penetration of the chemical, less risk of discoloration, faster recovery, and a better result. Obagi has its own pre-chemical peel preparations that essentially helps to remove the dead skin cells that will allow chemical peel agent to penetrate more deeply. Products that contain Retin-A stimulate the skin to regenerate and heal more quickly. Alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, boost the effects of the retin-A.
Since women with dark skin are at risk for developing uneven skin after a medium chemical peel, bleaching agents used before and the peel to minimize thisconcern. You can undergo a medium chemical peel without preparing the skin first, but results may not be optimal.
Medium peels are performed at a doctor’s office and require between 15-60 minutes depending the area(s) being treated. You may be offered pain pills or a sedative to help tolerate the burning sensation during peeling agent application. Your surgeon will apply the TCA chemical solution to one area at a time. When the appropriate amount of chemical has been applied and the depth of the peel has been achieved, the peel will be neutralized by applying iced saline. After that you should have no further discomfort.. Once all areas have been neutralized, your face will be coated with an oil-based ointment or steroid ointment to keep the skin moist and promote healing. No further pain medication should be required.
After the procedure you will have a bluish tint to your skin that generally washes off in 12 to 24 hours. Depending on the strength of the peel, you may experience slight swelling after the procedure but no
discomfort. Within 2 to 3 days, the treated skin will turn darker and begin to peel. This will continue for a few days. Within 7 to 10, your skin should be healed. As the old skin falls away, the new skin below may appear red or flushed. When peeling ends, you can begin wearing makeup. You should be able to begin your regular skincare regimen with two weeks. Any redness or flushed appearance will fade over several weeks.
Once all peeling has stopped you will notice a visible improvement in the skin which will continue to improve over the next 4 – 6 weeks resulting in a clearer, healthier, firmer and more youthful looking complexion.
How Long Will Results Last?
Medium chemical peels usually last six months to two years. If you use skin care products regularly after your peel, you will maximize the lasting benefits. Most choose medium chemical peels as the mainstay of their facial rejuvenation have a repeat peels.
