Grapefruit is a powerhouse when it comes to your health, but it can also do wonders for your skin too. Believe it or not, grapefruit can give you beautiful skin without laser treatments, acid peels, or any other costly beauty treatments.
Incorporating grapefruit in you daily diet is one way to get benefit from the fruit – that’s because grapefruit helps your body work efficiently so that it can flush out toxins and waste from all your cells. The vitamins and minerals in grapefruit then feed your cells and keep them healthy and strong.
Applying grapefruit directly to your skin can also result in beautiful skin. It’s packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients that help fight free radicals in the skin that can cause lines, wrinkles, discolorations and other blemishes caused by environmental damage. Grapefruit juice also has restorative properties that can help tone skin, even out skin color, and safely and gently cleanse skin. People who have oily skin usually find that their problems clear up very quickly after they start using a grapefruit cleanser and toner (see our Grapefruit / Witch Hazel Toner on Facebook).
You can make your own grapefruit skincare treatments at home very easily, and for just pennies per treatment. Using Ruby Red grapefruit will give your homemade cleansers, toners and scrubs a pretty pink color. You can also use grapefruit to keep the skin on the rest of your body, including your feet, soft and smooth. Try some of these easy grapefruit recipes at home and you are sure to see, and feel, the difference:
This is a great basic sugar scrub. It’s also a great foot scrub because grapefruit juice has natural anti-bacterial properties. It will not only cleanse your feet, it will soften and tone them too. Simply mix the following ingredients together in a large bowl (the recipe makes enough to give some away as gifts too). Use on damp or dry skin for best results or in the shower on a regular basis to keep your skin soft, toned and healthy.
- 3 cups extra fine granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed pink grapefruit juice (one grapefruit = about a cup of juice)
- 1/2 cup safflower oil
- 10 drops vitamin E oil (optional)
- 10 drops grapefruit essential oil (optional)
Squeeze the fresh grapefruit juice and strain the pulp.
Mix together sugar, juice and 1/2 cup safflower oil in a bowl. While safflower oil contains vitamin E, you can give it a boost by adding 10 drops of Vitamin E oil if you like.
Grapefruit juice is very fragrant, but you can intensify the smell by adding some drops of grapefruit essential oil – although this is entirely optional.
Mix well and place in air tight jars for future use. You can prolong the life of your scrub by refrigerating it.
Why This Works? The grapefruit juice cleanses the skin, sugar exfoliates and vitamin E in the safflower oil nourishes and moisturizes.
Pink Grapefruit Mask for Normal Skin
This antioxidant rich mask helps fight free radicals that cause fine lines and wrinkles. The secret to this mask is the grapefruit zest (the grated skin of the fruit) – that’s where all the essential oils are!
- 1 Whole Pink Grapefruit
- ¾ Cup Plain Whole Yoghurt (not lowfat)
First, use a zester or fine grater to grate the grapefruit rind into a small bowl (don’t grate the white fleshy part under the colored skin). Add the yoghurt and mix well.
Use clean fingers to apply the mask over your face and neck (avoid the eye area) and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and pat skin dry.
- ¼ Fresh Pink Grapefruit peeled and sectioned
- 1 Tablespoon Honey
- 1 Egg Yolk
- ½ cup Dry Oatmeal
Use a blender to puree all ingredients together until smooth. Apply mask to clean skin for about 10 minutes, then rinse in tepid water. Pat skin dry.
Why This Works? The oatmeal softens the skin, the egg yolk moisturizes, the honey act as an anti-inflammatory while the grapefruit cleanses the pores.
Pink Grapefruit Mask for Oily Skin
- ½ Fresh Pink Grapefruit peeled and sectioned
- 1 Tablespoon Honey
- 1 Egg White
- ½ cup Dry Oatmeal
Use a blender to puree all ingredients together. Apply mask to clean skin for about 10 minutes, then rinse in tepid water. Pat skin dry.
Why This Works? Just like the grapefruit, the honey is an anti-bacterial which is great for oily skin. The oatmeal softens the skin, and the egg white draws our excess oil, leaving your skin toned and tightened.
If you have sensitive skin – these recipes can work for you too . Just be sure to test the treatment on the area behind your ear before applying it to your entire face. The grapefruit can be acidic and it could irritate sensitive skin.
